Hello there, dear readers! Buckle up, because I’m about to take you on a wild ride through my decision to pack my bags and move abroad. I currently reside in the good ol' U.S. of A, but let’s just say that the recent changes around here have been about as pleasant as a root canal. Seriously, pretending everything is normal is like trying to wear a pair of shoes two sizes too small—painful and downright exhausting! Watching the world around me morph into something unrecognizable feels like I’m stuck in a poorly written dystopian novel where the only plot twist is that there is no plot twist. Just chaos. So, in an act of self-preservation, I’ve decided to take the plunge and leave.
This isn’t a decision I’ve made lightly, though. I mean, family is a big deal, right? And the thought of never having traveled outside the States has me feeling like a kid who’s just been told they can’t have ice cream for dinner. I haven’t even broached the subject with my family—let’s be real, that conversation might as well be a scene from a soap opera. “Mom, I’m moving to Asia!” “What?! But we just got a new couch!” So, my plan is to skedaddle quietly, then return for the Christmas holidays. You know, the one time a year we all pretend to like each other while fighting over who gets the last slice of sweet potato pie.
Now, let’s talk about where I’m headed: Asia! Why, you ask? Well, for starters, the cost of living is lower than my motivation to clean my house on a Saturday morning. Plus, I’ve heard the food is healthier—goodbye, greasy burgers; hello, delicious dumplings! And let’s not forget the friendly and safe environment. I can already picture myself wandering through bustling markets, trying to decipher menus written in languages I can barely pronounce. “Uh, yes, I’d like the… um… that thing with the sauce?”
My adult daughter is coming along for this adventure, and we’re both heading out with limited funds and a solid plan to teach English if our businesses haven’t taken off by the time we leave. Spoiler alert: they probably won’t. So, we’ve got packing to do, storage to secure, and a whole lot of hope in our pockets. It’s like we’re preparing for a reality show called “Two Americans Abroad: The Quest for Affordable Living.”
We plan to return to the U.S. once life decides to stop throwing curveballs at us, but for now, we’re ready to embrace the unknown. So, if you’re contemplating a change in your life, come along for the ride! We’ll tackle everything from the visa process (which sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare) to border runs (who knew crossing a line could be so complicated?) and even the exhilarating adventure of apartment hunting (cue the horror movie music). Stay tuned for what’s bound to be a rollercoaster of experiences, laughter, and maybe a few tears along the way!
